On wednesday, after spending the morning dealing with paperwork, I had my first class of the professional jewellery course.
For the next two years (unless the money runs our and I have to quit) I’ll learn to make a hollow ring, crown setting, articulated cuff and several other new techniques.
I started with the ring which will feature a beautiful amethyst my mother-in-law gave me. I sawed out the silver sheet, soldered the inner ring and made a sterling ingot to create wire for the walls between the inner and outer rings, Fusing silver always scares me a bit – dipping the molten metal onto the ingot mould requires great care – but I managed to make the ingot on my first try, which was great.
