Este anel foi concluà­do há algum tempo mas só agora tive oportunidade de descrever o processo de construção.
Basicamente é um anel oco, com uma secção interna e outra externa. Este modelo é muitas vezes usado para fazer anéis de curso mas pode ser adaptado a projectos muito diferentes.

A parte externa é composta por uma só peça enrolada que também serve de base para a pedra. O desenho desta peça assemelha-se a uma “fraldinha”. Para determinar o tamanho fiz o desenho aproximado da peça em papel e depois ajustei, com cortes e fita-cola, até ter o molde com a dimensão certa.

Depois de cortar a forma em chapa de metal (usei chapa de 0,5 mm), enrola-se no embutidor até ter a forma aproximada do anel.

Depois cria-se um anel interior. Forma-se um tubo a partir da mesma chapa, mais comprido do que o necessário para termos alguma margem para cortar mais tarde. Este anel interior é que deve ter o tamanho do dedo. A “fraldinha” deve ser ligeiramente maior.

Nesta fase comecei a moldar o top do anel à  pedra que tinha escolhido – um topázio em bruto. A escolha da pedra deu o tema para o aspecto do anel daà­ para a frente. Se fosse uma pedra facetada teria feito um anel completamente diferente.
Como a pedra era funda, optei por enterrá-la no anel. Se fosse baixinha teria ficado apenas assente no topo.

Soldei as abas laterais do anel.

Para o tubo interior entrar a direito dentro da parte externa é necessário limar a abertura até alargar o suficiente.

Quando o tubo entra justo e direito, pode-se marcar a zona a cortar. Deve-se deixar ainda uma pequena margem que será limada depois de soldar. É sempre mais seguro trabalhar com marges de segurança do que cortar tudo logo à  medida e depois arriscar a que falte 1 mm no final.
\nDepois de cortado, foi altura de decorar o tubo interior. Com a serra, recortei umas formas irregulares que achei estarem de acordo com o aspecto que queria dar ao anel.

Soldei o tubo interno à  parte externa.

Limei o topo para se adaptar à s irregularidades da pedra e para eliminar o máximo de linha direitas.

Testei para ver se a pedra ficava bem enquadrada e apoiada.

Usei uma técnica interessante para criar elementos decorativos que iriam rodear a pedra. No atelier de joalharia chamavam-lhe “tirar a nata”. Basicamente consiste em fundir o metal num carvão e depois usar a pinça ou outro utensà­lio para puxar uma tira de metal là­quido para o lado. Ao arrefecer formam-se peças texturadas interessantes. É preciso repetir o processo muitas vezes até se obterem elementos com o aspecto que queremos mas é divertido. Não consegui foi fotografar porque precisava das duas mãos.

Montei os diferentes bocados sobre plasticina, à  volta da pedra, para planear o layout. As pontas mais compridas iriam servir de garras para segurar a pedra.
Fotografei de diversos ângulos para conseguir mais tarde refazer o encaixe, quando fosse soldar.

Aqui já se podem ver os vários elementos soldados ao anel. Fui soldando um a um, amarrando com fio de ferro e isolando as parte já soldadas com corrector para evitar que a solda voltasse a correr.

Depois de polir, cravei a pedra. Nalguns casos foi necessário limar um pouco por dentro para conseguir dobrar as garras irregulares.
E o anel estava terminado. Chamei-lhe o anel de gelo.
Até hoje continua a ser uma das minhas peças preferidas.

Rough topaz hollow “diaper” ring – fabrication process

I finished this ring some time ago but only now did I have the opportunity to describe the fabrication process. It is basically a hollow ring, with an internal and an external sections. This ring construction is often seen in class rings, for example, but can be adapted to a multitude of designs.

The outer shell and top are just one piece that is curled around itself. A stone can sit inside the top or over it, depending on the design.
To figure out the correct size for my ring, I drew the general shape and then adjusted it by cutting and sticking it together with scotch tape. The shape resembles a “diaper”, which is the nickname we used for it in class.

I drew around my paper template and cut the shape out of metal sheet. I used 0,5 mm sheet (24g). Then I used a dapping block to curve it until the side tabs almost closed.
The inner tube was made out of the same metal sheet. It should be longer than necessary so there’s enough to cut down to size later on. This inner tube should be the ring size you want to obtain. The outer shell needs to be a little larger.

I chose a rough topaz for the ring and began shaping the top of the ring to fit the around the shape of the stone. Because it was a large stone, I chose to sink it into the top of the ring. A flat stone would just sit on top.The stone determined the look of the ring from this point on. A faceted stone would have inspired a very different ring. Once the shape was formed, I soldered the side tabs to close the top.

So that the inner tube could slide in straight, I had to file the side openings of the outer shell until it fit.
Once the tube could slide in tight and straight, I marked the area I needed to cut away. I left a little extra to file away later on, after it was soldered in place. It’s always best to leave a little extra for safety.

After cutting the excess from the sides of the inner ring, I cut some decorative shapes with the jeweller’s saw. Then I soldered the inner ring in place.

I filed the top of the ring so it would conform to the shape of the stone and also because I didn’t want straight lines in the design. I tested the fit of the stone several times during the whole process.

I used an interesting technique to obtain the decorative elements that would frame the stone. In class we called it “skimming the cream”. The general idea is to melt the metal on a coal block and then pull a bit of it to the side with tweezers. As it moves away from the heat source and cools, it creates a streak with an interesting molten texture. Sometimes it takes a while to get enough bits with a shape you can use but it’s fun getting there. Unfortunately I couldn’t take pictures of the process as I needed both hands. Maybe I’ll make a video one of these days, if anyone is interested.

I assembled the bits I wanted to use around the stone over plasticine, to plan the layout. The longer bits would be used as prongs for setting the stone.I took pictures from several angles so I could reassemble the design I chose later on, when soldering.

I soldered the elements one or two at a time. I used binding wire to keep them in place during the process and also protected the rest of the ring with liquid correction fluid to prevent the rest of the solder from plowing again.

After polishing, I set the stone. I had to file the inside of some of the thicker “prongs” in order to bend them.
The ring was finished. I called it my Ice Ring. It’s still one of my favourite pieces to this day. Later on I made a similar, simpler version of this setting for my mom with a rough azurite.
