Comecei há algum tempo a fazer jóias de leite materno.
O interesse por este tipo de peças tem sido imenso e permitiu-me pà´r os meus conhecimentos de joalharia ao serviço de um tipo de peça que, para as mamãs, tem um grande valor sentimental.
Muitas mães gostam de ficar com uma recordação desta época tão especial que é a fase de alimentação dos seus bebés, e se for integrado numa jóia bonita que podem usar sempre que desejarem, melhor ainda.
Tudo começou quando a minha cunhada comprou um kit para fazer um anel de leite materno. Teve receio de não conseguir fazer todo o processo sozinha por isso pediu-me para o fazer por ela.
Eu tinha conhecimento da existência das jóias de leite materno e a minha experiência prévia com resina deixou-me curiosa sobre o processo. Basicamente não compreendia como seria possível adicionar o leite em estado làquido à resina, quando toda a informação que eu tinha indicava que a resina se dá muito mal com água.
Segui as instruções e lá fiz o anel. Aparentemente funcionou tudo bem. Ficou branquinho e a resina curou sem problemas.
Como tinha leite extra e a quantidade a misturar era muito pequena, fiz uma experiência adicional com a resina epoxy que eu já utilizara antes, para ver se fazia diferença. Correu tudo igualmente bem.
O problema ocorreu mais tarde. Passado um mês, a experiência que tinha feito com a resina epoxy começou a amarelecer. A amostra adicional que eu tinha guardado, feita com a resina do kit, continuava branquinha.
Ocorreu-me então que a diferença estava na resina, o que hoje em dia sei que também é verdade. Só que uns meses mais tarde mesmo a mistura feita com a resina do kit também começou a ficar amarela. Mais devagarinho mas o resultado final seria o mesmo.
Por esta altura falei com um colega da joalharia que é formado em quàmica e discutimos o processo. Comecei a fazer experiências e pesquisa para encontrar um método mais estável e durável para esta técnica.
Finalmente cheguei, depois de muita experimentação, a um método que funciona. Mudei para resina poliester e o leite passa por um processo anti-bacteriano e antifúngico e é desidratado e moàdo antes de ser misturado com a resina. Ao retirar o làquido e prevenindo a multiplicação de micro-organismos, consegui finalmente chegar a um produto final mais durável.
Fico sempre com uma amostra de cada dose que faço para ir avaliando o resultado com o passar do tempo e ao fim de um ano nota-se que a peça fica um ou dois tons mais amarela do que a cor inicial mas sem mudanças dramáticas, o que é esperado de um produto com uma componente biológica. Também é possível que haja diferenças de acordo com a composição do leite, que varia de pessoa para pessoa.
É claro que o leite não é completamente branco e nalguns casos, dependendo da percentagem de gordura, há logo algumas zonas mais amarelas desde o inàcio, especialmente se a composição tiver mais gordura. Isso é perfeitamente natural e faz parte da composição do próprio leite. O importante é que se mantenha com o passar do tempo. O meu objectivo é fazer jóias duráveis que possam ser usadas e apreciadas durante muito tempo.
Os corações são muito populares por isso já fiz diversas variações.

Breast milk jewellery
Some time ago I began making breast milk jewellery.
There has been a great deal of interest for this kind of jewellery item and it allowed me to use my metalsmith knowledge to make something that means a great deal to my clients.
Many mothers want to have a keepsake to remind them of that precious time when they breastfed their babies. A beautiful breastmilk jewel, that can be worn close to their heart is the perfect souvenir of such a special time in their life.
Esta foi a peça onde comecei definitivamente a juntar as técnicas de joalharia ao design com os elementos e temas com que mais me identifico. Todas as peças são criadas a partir de escolhas pessoais – se gostamos mais de formas com bicos ou só curvas, grande ou pequeno, etc – mas aqui começou a solidificar-se aquilo que considero o meu estilo de jóias: uma mistura entre chapa e fio, com a pedra lindàssima como elemento central, oxidação da prata e muito detalhe e textura. O tema da chave ornamentada vem da inspiração steampunk, que me atrai há muito.
Como o exercício principal desta peça era criar uma cravação em coroa, comecei por escolher a pedra. Usei um topázio amarelo triangular que comprei na FIA há uns dois anos. A pedra foi cara mas gostei tanto do formato, cor e lapidação que não resisti a comprar. Uma pedra destas merecia uma peça especial, por isso desenhei diversas chaves até chegar a um projecto que me agradava. A “cabeça” da chave é também triangular, seguindo a forma da pedra.
Comecei pela cravação da pedra, que iria determinar as dimensões do resto da peça. Apesar de ter feito o projecto à escala real, é sempre bom ter o elemento central primeiro para ter a certeza que não fica demasiado apertado no final. Sem a cravação é mais fácil fazer pequenos erros de escala se não tivermos experiência ou cuidado suficientes.
Para a coroa usei chapa de 0,5 mm com a altura do pavilhão (parte de baixo da pedra, afunilada). Formei um triângulo com cantos arredondados, seguindo a forma e tamanho da pedra. Numa cravação de garras, esta base tem de ficar um pouco mais pequena do que a pedra porque as garras são soldadas por fora. No caso da cravação em coroa, o tamanho é um pouco maior. A pedra não pode caber completamente dentro da cravação mas quase.
Fazem-se cortes espaçados à volta da chapa, primeiro com a serra e depois com a lima triangular. Esses cortes são depois alargados e arredondados com uma fresa ou lima de meia cana, formando assim as garras e a forma de coroa. No enfiamento vertical das garras são também cortadas pequenas fendas em baixo que são igualmente arredondadas para dar a ideia de pequenos Us entre cada duas garras. Vai-se limando a chapa até a forma estar aperfeiçoada. Por fim limam-se linhas verticais no centro de cada garra para parecer que estas são mais finas e o resultado ser mais delicado.
Devo dizer que, pelo menos na primeira vez, este foi um processo demorado, de grande cuidado e paciência. Nos cantos, em particular o que tem a soldadura, é preciso muito cuidado para não limar demasiado porque o ângulo é maior e a lima tem tendência a gastar mais metal de uma só vez.
Assim que a forma está regular e redondinha, faz-se uma forma igual em fio quadrado de 1 mm que é soldado por baixo da chapa, servindo de base à coroa. É a este fio quadrado que vamos depois soldar os restantes elementos.
Com a cravação feita foi a vez de começar a construir a chave. A estrutura geral foi feita em fio quadrado de 2 mm. Por dentro da linha curva do topo soldei um fio torcido. O torcido é feito a partir de dois fios de 0,8mm (ou um fio dobrado ao meio). Uma ponta é presa no torno e a outra no porta-cavilhas. Vamos rodando o porta-cavilhas, torcendo os fios e dando calor com o maçarico nas zonas que vemos que não estão a enrolar tão bem como o resto.
O pé da chave foi feito com o mesmo fio quadrado de 2 mm e fio torcido. A junção do pé com a cabeça foi coberta com uma caixa composta por duas chapas de 0,5 mm em U curvas (uma em cima e outra em baixo) e duas paredes laterais, ou batas, com 0,8 mm de espessura. Primeiro soldam-se as laterais à chapa de base e só depois se coloca esta estrutura no sítio para soldar a “tampa”. Para conseguir que as laterais, ou batas, fiquem verticais sobre a base, faz-se uma só bata em U e depois de soldar ambos os lados desse U corta-se o excesso.
Esta parte foi a mais complicada porque a solda inicial, que fica por dentro, não se consegue isolar e volta a correr quando se aquece novamente, o que na primeira tentativa entortou a chave e foi preciso repetir o processo com maior apoio nessa zona. O ideal será soldar com a peça assente em gesso para ter a certeza que não mexe.
Por cima dessa caixa coloquei mais um fio redondo e outro rectangular, com fim decorativo.
Na zona de baixo da chave, em vez de dentes criei uma peça decorativa com caracóis e S em fio redondo de 1 mm. Soldei também três pequenas secções de fio rectangular com 1,5 mm de lado e 0,45 mm de espessura sobre o pé, para dar mais detalhe a essa zona.
Com a estrutura montada foi a vez de fazer os caracóis em S que iriam ligar a cravação à estrutura. Foi um bocado como fazer filigrana só que com um fio mais grosso. Usei o mesmo fio de 1 mm para ter a certeza que a peça tinha estabilidade. Fiz também pequenas bolinhas de prata para preencher os cantos e dar um pouco mais de variedade (tudo isso já previsto no projecto inicial).
Tendo o cuidado de isolar muito bem todos os caracolinhos com corrector, para não derreterem, soldei a cravação e por fim criei um L duplo em fio de 1 mm para servir de bilheira (peça de suporte por onde passa a corrente).
Para terminar a cravação é preciso fazer pequenos cortes no interior das garras para sustentar a pedra. Estes cortes têm de estar todos à mesma altura e não podem ser demasiado fundos para evitar que as garras se partam ao dobrar sobre a pedra. É um processo que requer paciência e rigor.
A peça foi oxidada e depois polida. O óxido fica nas reentrâncias, dando mais profundidade e realce ao relevo. O ultimo passo é a cravação da pedra e polimento da cabeça das garras, assim como eliminar algum risco accidental que tenha ocorrido durante a cravação.
Para cravar a pedra empurram-se as garras com cuidado, uma a uma, até assentarem na pedra. Se alguma ficar muito no ar pode-se passar a serra entre o metal e a pedra para gastar mais um bocadinho. Isto só se deve fazer se a pedra tiver dureza suficiente. Se fosse uma turquesa, por exemplo, não se poderia fazer isso porque a serra riscaria a pedra. Para verificar se a serra é segura com determinada pedra, consulte a minha tabela de durezas na escala de Mohs. As lâminas da serra são geralmente feitas de aço temperado, pelo que andam à volta de um 7 na escala de Mohs. Isso quer dizer que já é arriscado usar a serra com uma ágata e completamente desaconselhado para pedras mais moles.
Fiquei muito satisfeita com esta peça e inspirada para fazer variações sobre o tema.
Key Pendant – crown setting
This was the piece where I finally began joining silversmith techniques with the elements and themes I most identify with. All jewellery pieces are designed from a personal perspective – whether we prefer pointy or round shapes, large or small, etc – but here I began to solidify what i feel is my style of jewellery: a combination between sheet metal and wire, with a gorgeous stone as the focal point, oxidized silver and lots of details and texture. The idea of the key comes from my appreciation of steampunk imagery.
As the main goal of the piece was to create a crown setting, I started by sellecting the gemstone. I used a lovely yellow topaz I had bought at an International crafts fair a couple of ears earlier. The gemstone was expensive but I liked the shape, color and cut so much I couldn’t resist buying it. Such a gemstone deserved a special setting, so I drew several keys before getting to a project I liked. I was particularly inspired by the amazing work of artists like Iza Malczyk. The head of the key follows the triangular shape of the stone.
The crown setting would determine the size of the other elements, so I started there to make sure the fit wouldn’t be too tight in the end. Even when the project is at a scale of 1:1 it’s good to have a physical element to help get the rest of the measurements right, especially because a drawing won’t give you the exact notion of metal thickness, for example. It’s tempting to start from the outside in but you risk making sizing mistakes if you’re not experienced or careful enough, so I took the safest route.
For the setting I used silver sheet with a thickness of 0,5 mm (24 AWG) and the height of the stone pavilion (the lower, tapered part of the stone). I formed a triangle with rounded corners, following the shape and size of the stone. When doing a prong setting you have to make sure the bezel is a little smaller than the stone because the prongs are soldered on the outside and should run straight up the side of the stone. In a crown setting like this one, you have to make the bezel a little larger. The stone shouldn’t fall down the middle but almost.
I decided how many prongs I wanted and made cuts between each one with a jeweller’s saw. Then I enlarged the cuts with a triangular file. These cuts are further enlarged and shaped with the help of round and half round files until you have a crown shape. At the bottom of the bezel, aligned with the middle of each prong, I made cuts that were also rounded and refined until the bezel looked like it was formed by several U shapes side by side. You just keep filing the metal until you get the shape right. It’s a long and careful process. Finally I filed vertical grooves from top to bottom, at the center if each prong. This is merely a decorative step to make it look like the prongs are thinner and more delicate than they actually are.
All this was a long and careful process that took great care and patience. At the corners I had to be especially careful not to file too much because the tighter angle makes it easier to remove more metal in one go.
As soon as the shape was all nicely regular and rounded I made a similar triangular shape out of 1 mm square wire for the base of the crown setting. It’s this square wire shape that is going to be soldered to the remaining design elements.
With the stone setting completed I was able to turn my attention to the rest of the design and start building the key. The overall structure was made from 2 mm square wire. Inside the top frame I soldered a twisted wire. It was made by twisting two 0,8 mm (20 AWG) wires together (or one wire folded in half). One end of the wires is attached to a pin vice and the other to a bench vice. You turn the pin vice and apply heat with the torch as you go to keep the twisting even and prevent the wires from breaking because they harden as you twist.
The long part of the key was made with the same 2 mm (12 AWG) square wire and twisted wire. I covered the area where this part meets the head of the key with a small box-like component made from silver sheet. I cut two U shape pieces out of 0,5 mm (24 AWG) sheet and curved them. I made the side walls out of another U shape (out of square wire). This helps to keep both walls in place while soldering. If I tried doing one at a time it would be a lot harder to solder them vertically. When the walls are in place, I covered the key skeleton and soldered the “lid” in place.
This part was the hardest because, as you heat up the “box”, the inner solder also heats up and wants to run. On my first try the key got all twisted and I had to try again with better support for all the different parts. I should probably have stabilized it in plaster to prevent such an issue.
The box componente was a bit bare so I decorated it with some bands of round and rectangular wire.
At the bottom of the key, instead of the traditional teeth, I made some wire swirls out of 1 mm round wire. I also soldered three small sections of 1,5 mm x 0,45 mm rectangular wire around the long stem to add detail to the area.
The main structure was done so it was time to make the swirls that would connect the stone setting to the rest. It was almos like making filigree only with thicker wire. I ised the same 1 mm wire for stability. I also made some small silver balls to fill the negative space in the corners and add more detail.
To prevent the wire swirls from melting as I soldered each one, I covered them with correction fluid (it gets the metal dirty so it doesn’t melt as easily and previous solder doesn’t run). Swirl by swirl I soldered the setting to the base. Finally I created a double lower-case handwritten L shape out of 1 mm round wire to work as a bail.
To set the stone I had to make small cuts on the inside of the prongs, to keep the stone in place. These cuts need to be all at the exact same height and can’t be too deep to prevent the prongs from breaking when they bend over the stone. It’s a process that requires patience and precision.
The key was oxidized with liver of sulfur and then polished. The patina remains in the crevices and adds depth to the textures. The last steps are setting the stone and polishing the prongs to remove any accidental scratches made during the setting process.
The stone is set by carefully pushing each prong until they meet the stone, while making sure it remains level. If any of the prongs refuses to bend completely, you can take the jeweller’s saw and run it between the prong and the stone to remove a bit more metal and make it easier to bend. This should only be done if the stone is harder than the metal of the saw. It’s fine for quartz, topaz and other harder stones but you should be careful with anything softer – it’s risky for agates and mus’t be done at all with a turquoise or pearl. To check if the saw is safe around the stone you’re using, check out my mohs scale chart. Saw blades are usually made from hardened steel, so they fall around 7 on the Mohs hardness scale.
I was very happy with this piece and inspired to make variations on the theme.
Esta peça de joalharia tinha dois objectivos de aprendizagem: A cravação de 8 garras e o espigão com aro de escape.
Como sempre, comecei por escolher as pedras. Tinha comprado um par de topázios amarelos iguais na última feira de minerais e a sua forma quadrada era perfeita para a cravação de 8 garras.
Depois de vários esboços, cheguei ao desenho da peça que queria fazer.
Fiz a base da cravação com um fio redondo, segundo o método usual: o fio contorna a pedra de forma a ficar perto do topo mas sem se ver de cima.
Depois de soldar esse aro da base, montei as 8 garras à sua volta, sobre plasticina.
Coloquei mais um rolo de plasticina à volta da zona onde as garras tocam no aro da base (zona onde iria depois soldar). Por cima de tudo isso deitei gesso. Aliás, esta peça levou várias doses de gesso para prender e estabilizar os diversos elementos, permitindo soldá-los sem se mexerem. É um método muito usado quando o rigor é importante.
Quando o gesso estava seco, tirei o rolo de plasticina e fiquei com espaço para soldar as garras à base.
Com os fios soldados, cortei fora o excesso e soldei um aro mais pequeno para proteger o bico da pedra. A cravação estava terminada.
Cortei as várias chapas que formavam o desenho do brinco e dei-lhes volume no embutidor. Se repararem, cada chapa tem um número riscado com agulha para não me esquecer da ordem de montagem.
Montei os brincos novamente sobre a plasticina e cobri com gesso.
Soldei as três chapas de cada brinco só na ponta para poder criar nàveis diferentes. Uma das preocupações a ter quando se faz uma peça de joalharia é criar volume. Uma peça com vários nàveis é sempre mais interessante do que uma completamente plana.
Com as pontas soldadas, cortei várias secções de fio quadrado para servirem de pilar de sustentação para cada um dos nàveis. Isso dá mais estabilidade à peça.
Chegada a altura de introduzir a cravação, foi necessário fazer um furo na chapa por onde iria passar a serra.
Marquei o quadrado aproximado equivalente ao tamanho da cravação e serrei. É importante serrar sempre uma forma ligeiramente mais pequena do que o pretendido e depois limar até atingir o tamanho certo. Se ao serrar se tira demasiado metal e o encaixe fica muito largo, é muito mais difàcil de corrigir.
Limar o quadrado até a cravação encaixar perfeitamente justa foi o trabalho mais demorado porque é preciso estar constantemente a parar e experimentar se já está bom.
Voltei a cobrir com gesso para soldar a cravação à s chapas do brinco.
Ao soldar é importante colocar corrector nas soldaduras anteriores, para evitar que o trabalho anterior se estrague. Também é muito importante apontar o calor apenas para a chapa porque os fios da cravação aquecem mais depressa e podem derreter se levarem com o fogo directo.
Havia um ponto ou outro em que as garras não tocavam na chapa por isso foi necessário acrescentar uma pequena ponte de prata que depois foi limada. Como a curva da chapa não permitia o acesso da lima naquela zona, usei uma ponta diamantada para gastar o excesso.
Com as cravações soldadas, chegou a hora de fazer as batas. A bata é uma parede que dá altura à peça. Neste caso a bata foi apenas parcial, levantando apenas a zona do bico.
Depois de limar as chapas da bata de forma a que encaixassem perfeitamente na parte de trás do brinco, cobri novamente com gesso, deixando o bico de fora para soldar. Com o bico “apontado” com solda, tirei o gesso e soldei o resto. Tive o cuidado de colocar corrector na primeira soldadura para que a bata não deslizasse para fora do sítio quando o resto da solda começasse a correr.
Com a bata soldada, chegou a hora de fazer os aros de escape dos brincos. Para isso comecei por soldar um espigão vertical na parte de trás de cada brinco, paralelo à s garras. Depois fiz um fio quadrado de 18mm, dobrei em L e espalmei as pontas com um martelo (uma na horizontal e outra na vertical).
Na foto acima vemos o aro do brinco e um gonzo, semelhante ao que se usa nas pregadeiras, para fazer dobradiça. É necessário furar ambas as pontas espalmadas do aro: um furo na base para encaixar no gonzo e outro na ponta mais longa para criar a abertura onde entra o espigão.
A base do aro do brinco tem de ser arredondada para rodar dentro do gonzo. Com o aro temporariamente no sitio, é mais fácil perceber onde deve ser feito o furo para acomodar o espigão (visto aqui na vertical).
A ponta do espigão também tem de ser martelada para espalmar e corta-se um pequeno triângulo para encaixar no aro quando fecha. As medidas têm de ser rigorosas para fazer o click e não se abrir acidentalmente.
O problema maior deste tipo de espigão é que o recorte pode magoar ao passar no furo da orelha.
Antes de colocar a cavilha no aro, faz-se a cravação das pedras e o polimento.
Por fim coloca-se o rebite do aro, apertando com um alicate, e a peça está concluàda.
Leverback earrings with 8 prong setting
The project for these earrings included two learning exercises: the 8 prong stone setting and the leverback closure.
As always, I started by picking out the gemstones. I had bought a couple of identical topaz stones at the last mineral fair, and its square shape was perfect for the 8 prong setting.
After several sketches, I came up with the overall design.
I started by making the support for the stone from 0,9 mm round wire (19AWG) in the usual method: the wire should go around the stone, close to the edge but small enough that you won’t see it when you look from above.
After soldering the base wire closed, I placed it over plasticine and secured the prongs around it, evenly. Plasticine helps to keep everything in place while you work. I use the oil based plasticine that doesn’t dry (unlike play-doh).
I placed a roll of plasticine around all the prongs, where they touch the base wire. That was the area I wanted to solder, so I needed it to remain clear. I poured plaster on top of the setting and allowed it to dry. The plaster keeps everything in place as you solder, so the prongs won’t move. It’s a great help for precise construction. This piece required plaster several times to stabilize all the different elements and allow me to solder them without stress.
Once the plaster was dry, I removed the plasticine and was left with enough room to solder three prongs.
When the prongs were secured, I cut off the excess wire and soldered a smaller wire ring at the bottom of the setting, to protect the lower tip of the stone. This completed the setting.
I cut several triangular shapes out of o,5 mm sheet metal to shape the body of the earrings. I used a doming set to give a subtle curve to the metal. If you look closely you’ll see each element has a number scratched on the surface so I wouldn’t mess up the order in which they were to be assembled later on. I use a sewing needle attached to a pin vice to make these marks. It works like a pencil.
Once again I assembled the 3 plates that make up each earring over the plasticine and covered them with plaster.
I soldered the tip of the three plates. The rest was loose so I could make different levels. One of the main concerns when making jewellery is that the piece must have volume. A flat piece is boring so we always try to create different levels.
After soldering the tips I cut several bits of square wire to make pillars that would support the opposite end of the plates, to stabilize the height.
To insert the stone setting I had to cut off a square section. I made a small hole with the drill and inserted my jeweller’s saw to cut the rest.
I always cut a bit smaller than what I’m going to need and file away the rest. Since the fit needs to be tight, if you cut the hole too wide there will be no contact between the setting and the cheet metal around it, making it impossible to solder.
Filing this square until the setting fit perfectly was extremely time consuming but it’s important to have a good fit so I had to keep checking the fit to make sure I wasn’t taking off too much metal.
I covered everything in plaster once again to solder the settings to the earrings.
When soldering a new part it’s important to cover previously soldered joints with liquid paper white out. It gets the metal dirty so it protects it from melting and keeps the solder from flowing again. It’s also important to aim the heat at the largest part you’re soldering, in this case the sheet metal. The wire in the setting heats up faster and may melt if you point the flame directly at it.
There was the occasional spot where the prong didn’t touch the metal (even after being so careful) so I had to add a “bridge” made from a bit of wire that was later filed away until it looked like it was part of the prong. Due to the curve in the metal I couldn’t use a regular file in that spot, so I used a diamond burr with my flex-shaft.
After the settings were soldered in place it was time to make the walls. This is another process that gives dimension to a piece. In this case it was only a partial wall that tapered from the tip towards the wider part of the earring.
I shaped and filed a strip of rectangular wire to fit perfectly against the shape of the earring and covered it with plaster but left the tip uncovered so I could solder. Once that first solder held everything in place I could remove the plaster and add more solder to the rest of the walls. I was careful to cover the soldered tip in liquid paper white out to prevent the solder fro running in that area, which would have made the walls move or collapse.
Once the main part of the earrings was done, it was time to focus on the post and leverback construction. I soldered the post to the back of the setting, parallel to the prongs. I then made an 18mm square wire, using the rolling mill. I folded it in an L shape and hammered the end flat – one side vertically and the other horizontally.
On the picture above you can see both elements that will make the hinge for the leverback. I had to make a hole at both flat ends of the L shape. On one side will be the hinge and on the other there’s and opening for the post.
The hinge base has to be rounded so it will rotate. By placing the latch in place it’s easier to mark the spot for the holes.
The tip of the post also needs to be hammered flat and a small triangular notch need to be cut. This will allow the post to lock in place when closing. Measurements need to be precise so it will click closed, preventing it from opening accidentally.
The main problem I have with this kind of post is that the notch in the post can hurt your ear when you put it on.
Before securing the leverback I set the stone and polished the earrings. Check out my older tutorials for further details on the setting and polishing stages.
Finally I inserted a piece of wire in the hinge and squeezed it with pliers to form a rivet. The earrings were done.
Há algum tempo, quando estava a fundir prata, deixei acidentalmente cair parte do metal incandescente em cima de uma chapa de alumànio. Como é óbvio, a prata fundiu-se imediatamente com o alumànio, estragando completamente a prata.
Em circunstâncias normais a maioria das pessoas teria dito “Oh! Que chatice!” e deitado fora o metal estragado, mas eu tenho dificuldade em aceitar situações em que faço asneira e não desisto se houver alguma esperança de resolver o problema.
Com persistência, a internet salva-nos muitas vezes o dia, graças à quantidade de informação que tantas pessoas simpáticas se dão ao trabalho de disponibilizar. É uma das razões pelas quais escrevo tutorials – porque o facto de outros o terem feito antes já me ajudou tantas vezes, que se puder ajudar alguém de volta, sinto que é meu dever fazê-lo.
Descobri então que era possível resolver o meu problema dissolvendo a prata em ácido nàtrico porque este dissolve a prata mas não o alumànio. Perfeito! Conseguia assim voltar a separar os dois metais.
Encontrar ácido nàtrico foi o passo seguinte. Consegui descobri-lo à venda numa drogaria mas só tinham garrafões de dois litros. Considerando que isto era algo para fazer uma só vez e que o ácido é vendido num nàvel de pureza bastante grande, não quis arriscar ter uma substância tão perigosa em casa, especialmente nessas quantidades.
Ao explicar o meu problema no atelier, um dos meus colegas, que é professor de quàmica, ofereceu-se para me arranjar uma pequena quantidade do ácido, já bastante diluàdo, só para poder fazer a experiência.
Li tudo o que encontrei sobre as precauções a ter e devo agora dizer que não aconselho nem encorajo ninguém a fazer esta experiência em casa. A dissolução da prata em ácido nàtrico causa gazes tóxicos que não devem ser respirados e o ácido é corrosivo para a pele, roupa, etc, e não deve de forma alguma entrar em contacto com os olhos ou vias respiratórias. Se alguém quiser mesmo assim fazer a experiência, por favor tenham o cuidado de o fazer ao ar livre e com a vestimenta protectora adequada – avental para ácido, luvas para ácido, máscara e óculos de protecção. Se algo correr mal, não me culpem a mim. Foram avisados dos riscos.
Primeiro vesti o material de protecção: macacão por cima da roupa, luvas para ácido, máscara com filtro para gazes e óculos de protecção. Senti-me um bocado como o Mr. White 🙂
Fui para o terraço e levei um frasco com o ácido (numa concentração baixinha – o ácido muito puro, por estranho que pareça, é menos eficaz) e outro frasco maior com água quente. O processo de dissolução da prata funciona melhor se o ácido for aquecido. Como não tinha forma de o aquecer directamente, usei o método do banho maria: aqueci água numa chaleira, deitei-a num frasco largo e coloquei o frasco do ácido, mais fino, lá dentro. O calor da água que rodeia o frasco de dentro acaba por aquecer o ácido o suficiente para acelerar o processo.
Não tenho fotos desta primeira fase porque manter as luvas e tentar não respirar os gazes tóxicos preocupava-me mais do que tirar fotos. Se estão curiosos sobre o que acontece, podem ver este vàdeo.
Quando a prata estava toda dissolvida, diluà ainda mais o ácido com água destilada e filtrei a solução utilizando um filtro de café. Os restos de alumànio ficaram no filtro e sobrou um frasco com nitrato de prata. Como a prata não era pura, mas sim uma liga com cobre, o làquido final ficou azul em vez de transparente, mas para o que eu queria, isso era irrelevante.
A fase seguinte era recuperar a prata suspensa na solução, Para tal bastou introduzir um tubo de cobre no frasco com o nitrato de prata. A prata foi substituàda por cobre na solução e foi caindo para o fundo, em estado sólido. Este é um processo que pode demorar algumas horas.
O pó cinzento no fundo do frasco é a prata que se foi precipitando com a introdução do cobre na solução.Quando já não via mais prata a cair ao fundo, filtrei novamente a solução e fiquei com uma lama cinzenta no filtro. Esta “lama” era a minha prata.
Ainda voltei a introduzir o tubo de cobre na solução e deixei ficar de um dia para o outro, para ter a certeza que tinha recuperado toda a prata possível.
Entretanto deixei secar a prata recuperada que se transformou num fino pó.Passei esse pó para o carvão para fundir a prata.Com o maçarico aqueci o pó até a prata fundir completamente. quando estava em estado làquido, deitei-a para o molde, chamado rilheiraUm pequeno lingote de prata pura recuperadaRepeti o processo de recuperação da prata as vezes necessárias até ter toda a prata que consegui extrair do ácido. No final tinha cerca de 25 gramas de prata pura, pronta a fundir com cobre para fazer a liga.
No final anulei o ácido com bicarbonato de sódio. É mais um passo que requer muito cuidado porque a reacção quàmica resultante causa vapores que não convém respirar e forma uma espuma que aumenta brutalmente o volume do làquido. O ácido deve ser deitado em quantidades ànfimas de cada vez sobre o bicarbonato de sódio, num recipiente bastante grande para evitar que venha tudo por fora.
Quando o ácido está inerte (quando deixa de borbulhar) já se pode deitar fora sem medo de danificar a canalização.
Mais uma vez, não aconselho a ninguém esta experiência mas achei que podia pelo menos partilhar a informação que adquiri para o caso de alguém vir a precisar. Se forem trabalhar com ácidos ou outros materiais perigosos, por favor tenham os cuidados necessários. Um salpico de ácido pode até parecer inofensivo e uns dias depois está um buraco enorme na camisola ou uma mancha preta na mesa. Mesmo diluàdo, o efeito é poderoso. Pode é demorar mais tempo.
Silver purification with nitric acid
Some time ago, while casting silver, I accidentally dripped some of the molten metal onto a sheet of aluminium. As expected, the silver fused with the aluminium and was useless.
In normal circumstances most people would go “oh well, bad luck!” and toss out the metal, but I have a hard time accepting situations where I mess up and I won’t quit if there’s the slightest chance of fixing the problem.
With persistence, often the internet will save the day, thanks to the wide range of information so many kind people bother to share. It’s one of the reasons I write tutorials – because so many others have helped me, if I can help back even one person, I feel it’s my duty to do so.
I soon found out my problem could be solved by dissolving the silver in nitric acid because this acid will eat away the silver but not the aluminium. Perfect! By using this process I was able to separate these two metals once again.
Finding the nitric acid was the next step. I found it on sale at a local drugstore but they only sold the stuff in two litre bottles. Since this was meant to be a one time thing and that the acid is sold with little dilution, I didn’t want to risk having such a dangerous substance at home, especially in such quantity.
I explained my problem to some people at the jewellery studio where we have our classes and one of my colleagues, who is a chemistry teacher, offered to get me a small quantity of the acid, so I could experiment.
I read everything I could find on the precautions to take while working with acid and I must say that I don’t encourage anyone to do this at home.Dissolving silver in nitric acid emits toxic gases that should not be inhaled and the acid will burn your skin, clothes, etc, and it should not, under any circumstance, get in contact with your eyes or respiratory tract. If anyone still wants to try this out, please be careful, do it outdoors and with the proper protective gear – acid-proof rubber apron, acid-proof gloves, gas mask and protection goggles.. If something goes wrong, don’t blame me. You have been warned.
I put on my protective gear: overalls, acid-proof gloves, gas mask and googles. I felt a little like Mr. White 🙂
I took my acid jar outside along with a larger jar filled with hot water. The acid must be diluted. If it’s too pure it will cause the silver to oxidise and it won’t work as well, oddly enough. The process works faster if the acid is warm. As I didn’t have a way to heat the acid directly, I placed the acid jar inside the larger jar filled with hot water (only fill the water jar about two thirds up or it will overflow). The hot water will warm up the acid and that’s enough to speed up the chemical reaction.
I don’t have pictures of this initial stage because I was too concerned with keeping my gloves on and not breathing in the toxic fumes to take any pictures. If you’re curious about what happens, you can watch this video.
Once the silver was dissolved, I diluted the acid further and used a coffee filter to remove impurities from the solution. The aluminium bits were left behind in the filter and I was left with a bottle filled with silver nitrate. Since it wasn’t pure silver but silver mixed with copper, the copper turned the liquid blue. This was fine for what I needed.
The next stage consisted in recovering the silver suspended in the solution. All it took was inserting a copper tube into the jar. The copper replaced the silver in the solution and the silver flaked off to the bottom of the jar in solid form. This process can take a few hours but it’s fun to watch.
The grey dust at the bottom of the jar is the silver precipitate that occurred when I placed the copper tube into the solution.When I couldn’t see any more silver falling to the bottom, I filtered the solution again and was left with grey mud in the filter. This mud was my silver.
I placed the copper tube into the solution once again and left it overnight to be sure I had recovered all the silver.
In the meantime I allowed the silver mud to dry and it turned into a fine grey dust.I placed my grey silver dust on a coal block to melt it.I heated the dust with the torch until it melted completely. Once it was liquid I poured it into the ingot mould.A small ingot made from recovered fine silver.I repeated the process as many times as necessary to recover all the silver I managed to filter out of the acid. By the end I had 25 grams of fine silver, ready to bind with copper once again to produce sterling silver.
Once the whole process was done I neutralised the acid with baking soda. It’s another step that requires great care because it triggers another chemical reaction that releases unhealthy fumes and causes foam that can overflow. The acid should be poured into a large container, little by little, over the baking soda, and not the other way around.
When the acid stops bubbling it means that it’s been neutralised and you can throw it away safely.
Once again, I stress the fact that I don’t advise anyone to try this at home, but I thought I should share the information anyway in case someone is in desperate need of it. If you work with acid or any dangerous chemicals, please be careful. A little splash of even very diluted acid may seem harmless at first and a few days later there’s a huge hole in your sweater or a large black spot on your kitchen table. The diluted version is still powerful, it just takes longer.
Como primeira peça do curso profissional de Joalharia, fiz um anel oco. A diferença principal em relação ao anel anterior é que este tem um forro enquanto o outro tinha apenas as batas. Acho que acaba por ser mais confortável assim mas tem uma complexidade técnica adicional.
Começa-se, como sempre, de dentro para fora. Como o anel tem uma medida fixa, a peça que assenta sobre o dedo (neste caso o forro) é a que se faz primeiro. Fiz o forro com uma tira de chapa de 0,5 mm.
Em cima do forro assentam as batas, que são as paredes do anel. Fiz um fio quadrado de 2 mm que depois laminei até ficar com 1 mm de altura. Ao laminar, o fio esticou, transformando-se numa placa de 1×2,8 mm. Não é necessário trabalhar com uma bata tão larga mas não só dá mais estabilidade como dá jeito porque podemos limar à vontade para aperfeiçoar o anel sem correr o risco de ficar fina demais.
A bata é depois transformada num càrculo. Dobrar metal de forma a arredondar a parte mais larga não é tarefa fácil. Foi preciso agarrar com dois alicates e ir forçando, bocadinho a bocadinho, sempre com cuidado porque a tendência é para o metal querer dobrar pelo lado mais fino.
Quando consegui formar dois càrculos aproximadamente do tamanho certo, cortei-os ligeiramente mais pequenos do que o necessário – como ainda é preciso bater para formar um càrculo perfeito e limar o interior para retirar as marcas do arame, a dimensão tem de ser sensivelmente 1,5 mm mais pequena do que a medida do forro. Soldei as batas, formei os càrculos e depois limei-as de forma a ficarem mais grossas no topo e mais finas em baixo, para o anel ficar mais confortável.
Com as batas terminadas, fiz um novo cilindro de chapa, desta vez para a cobertura do anel. É aqui que se define se o anel é todo da mesma largura ou se é mais fino em baixo e mais largo em cima. Também se pode arredondar esta chapa para dar volume extra. Optei por fazer o anel mais fino em baixo, novamente por uma questão de conforto, mas deixei a superfàcie plana.
As batas foram então soldadas à cobertura. Começa-se por “apontar”, que significa colocar apenas um ponto de solda para permitir ajustar a posição da bata na restante secção do anel. Só depois é que se solda o resto. Nesta fase convém abusar da quantidade de solda porque há tantas soldaduras futuras que se a solda não for suficiente, e mesmo que se protejam as soldaduras anteriores, vai deixar pequenos poros que ficam feios no final. Isso pode acontecer à mesma, se existir alguma sujidade presente nas partes a soldar.
Com ambas as batas soldadas à cobertura do anel, inseri o forro e marquei os limites. Dentro desses limites fiz um desenho formado por pequenos càrculos, que furei com brocas de diferentes tamanhos. É um pormenor decorativo mas também tem uma função prática. O forro necessita de ter sempre pelo menos um furo porque ao soldar cria-se pressão dentro do anel, que é oco, e este pode rebentar se não tiver um ponto de escape. Para ajudar a furar o forro prendi-o no punho de madeira, que ajuda a estabilizar sem deformar. Depois soldei o forro, serrei o metal em excesso e a base do anel estava concluàda. Um anel sem pedra ficaria por aqui, tirando a parte de limar e polir.
Para este anel faltava criar a cravação da pedra. A pedra escolhida foi uma ametista linda que a minha sogra me ofereceu no Natal do ano passado. Para a base, laminei fio de 2 mm até obter uma chapa com 2,80×0,65mm e formei uma oval que não se via ao espreitar por cima da pedra. Como a pedra era muito alta foi necessário recortar um pouco do anel para inserir a cravação porque ficaria com demasiado volume se ficasse toda de fora. Esta parte demorou muito tempo porque o encaixe tinha de ser rigoroso, por isso era preciso limar um bocadinho, experimentar e repetir o processo as vezes necessárias até as duas peças encaixarem perfeitamente. Soldei a cravação à base do anel e depois soldei duas “tampinhas” semi circulares na base da cravação, na zona que sai para fora da base do anel.
Cortei também uma oval no forro para a luz passar pela pedra. É algo que se faz sempre com pedras transparentes ou translúcidas. Por fim soldei as garras de chapa com 0,88×1,9mm, feitas a partir de fio de 1,5mm, duas a duas, formando um U por cima da cravação, o que ajuda a mantê-las no sítio durante a soldadura. Solda-se uma de cada vez e verifica-se a posição da seguinte antes de continuar.
Com as soldaduras principais terminadas, começou o trabalho de aperfeiçoar a superfàcie do anel. Foi preciso limar até desaparecerem todas as junções, restos de solda e arestas. Quando estava tudo limpo fiz um pequeno lingote de ouro que laminei primeiro em fio quadrado de 2,5mm e depois em chapa até ficar com 3,40×0,60mm. Soldei esta chapa centrada ao longo de toda a superfàcie do anel. Nas pontas ficou ligeiramente levantada e foi soldada em cima da base da cravação.
Acabei de limar e lixar e comecei o longo processo de polimento. A pior parte de polir prata é a maldita mancha cinzenta, a que os ingleses chamam firestain, e que se forma abaixo da superfàcie do metal durante a soldadura, graças à oxidação do cobre presente na liga. É preciso gastar o metal até a mancha desaparecer, utilizando o sabão de polimento castanho, e não é nada fácil, especialmente em recantos onde as escovas não chegam. Depois de horas e horas de volta dessa fase lá consegui eliminar cerca de 90% da mancha. As peças que vemos à venda nas joalharias têm muitas vezes um banho de prata para cobrir a mancha. Há outros métodos mais industriais para remover a mancha mas implicam ácidos e máquinas que não são acessàveis a um pequeno atelier.
Antes do polimento final foi preciso cravar a pedra. Para tal é preciso retirar um pouco do metal no interior das garras para que estas dobrem sem dificuldade sobre a pedra. Para a cabeça da garra assentar completamente é geralmente necessário inserir a serra entre a pedra e a garra e gastar o metal mais um pouco, seguindo a forma da pedra. Algures durante este processo devo ter-me entusiasmado um bocadinho demais porque uma das garras partiu. Provavelmente por serem em chapa e não em fio, como as que tinha feito anteriormente, devo ter retirado demasiado metal. Foi preciso retirar aquela e soldar uma nova. Não custou muito mas a maldita mancha cinzenta voltou a aparecer e tive de polir tudo de novo. Ficaram alguns pequenos poros aqui e ali que foram impossàveis de evitar mas quando o professor diz que estou a ser demasiado perfeccionista tenho de aceitar e deixar de obcecar por isso 🙂
Por fim lá terminei o anel e até fiquei satisfeita com o resultado. É muito volumoso, mas como a pedra era grande precisava de uma base com um aspecto sólido o suficiente para a sustentar.

As my first piece for the jewellery professional course I made a hollow ring. The main difference to the previous ring is that this one has an inner tube while the other had only the walls. It’s a more comfortable ring this way but it has additional technical difficulties.
You begin, as always, from the inside out. Since the ring has a fixed size, the inner tube must fit the finger and so you start with that. I made the inner tube from 0,5 mm silver sheet metal.
The walls of the ring now have to fit snugly on top of the inner tube. I made a 2mm square wire and turned it into a 1×2,8mm strip by putting it through the rolling mill which flattens and stretches the wire. It’s not necessary to use such a thick wall but it adds stability and it’s also handy in the final stages because you can sand it freely without making it too thin.
The strip is then bent into a circle. Bending a metal strip along the thicker edge is a tricky business. I had to grab it with two pairs of pliers and force it along, bit by bit, always very careful not to let it bend the wrong way. When I finally managed to form two circles of approximately the right size, I cut them slightly smaller than the size I needed because I still had to hammer them into shape and that process will stretch the metal further. the inside will also need to be filled to remove any dents, which will also increase the inner diameter. So the size of the ring should be about 1,5mm smaller than the size of the inner tube.
When they were done, I soldered the circles shut, hammered them on a ring mandrel to make them perfectly round and filled them so that the underside would be thinner than the top, to make the ring more comfortable.
With the walls complete, I made a new silver tube, this one for the outer shell. At this stage you must decide if the ring is going to be all the same thickness, if it will be flat or rounded. I decided to make the ring thinner on the bottom and thicker on top, again for a matter of comfort, but I left the surface flat.
The walls were then soldered to the shell. I started by soldering only one point in the circle so I could adjust the rest of it to the correct position before soldering the whole thing. At this stage it’s advisable to use a great deal of solder because if you use too little you risk having gaps later on because even if you protect each previous joint during subsequent soldering, the solder still tends to move a little each time. Small pores may also show up on the solder joints if there’s any dirt present when soldering. Keeping the metal clean is extremely important.
With both walls soldered to the outer shell, I inserted the inner tube and marked a line around the edges where it will be later soldered and cut. I defined the inner perimeter this way. within that perimeter, I marked and drilled several round holes in a random pattern using drill bits of different sizes. It’s a decorative detail but it’s also a practical matter. Hollow rings need to have at least one opening because when you solder it shut, gases build up inside the ring and if there isn’t an exhaust hole, it will explode. To help drill the holes, I placed the tube in a wooden holder that stabilises the ring while drilling. I soldered the inner tube to the walls and cut away he excess metal. The ring base was concluded. A ring without a stone would be concluded at this point, apart from filing and polishing.
For this ring it was time to make the stone setting. The gemstone i selected was a beautiful amethyst my mother-in-law gave me for Christmas last year. For the base, I flattened some 2 mm wire on the rolling mill until I had a 2,80×0,65mm strip, and formed an oval shape that could not be seen when you looked down from the top of the stone. Since the stone was very high, I had to cut away some of the ring shell and walls to sink the setting into it. This part took the longest because it had to be a very tight fit so I had to file away some of the metal, test the fit and then repeat over and over again until it was done. I soldered the stone setting to the ring base and then soldered some half circles to the bottom of it, to cover the parts that protrude beyond the ring.
I also cut away an oval shape in the inner tube so that light could shine through the gemstone. It’s something that should always be done for transparent or translucent stones. Finally I soldered the claws onto the stone setting. The claws were made from a 0,88×1,9mm strip, formed by flattening 1,5mm wire. I formed a U shape which allowed me to stabilise the wire and solder the claws in pairs. I soldered the first one then checked the position of the other before soldering it as well.
With all the main soldering done, it was time to perfect the ring. This meant filing away joints, solder piles and edges. When the outer shell was clean I made a small gold nugget and rolled it first into 2,5 mm square wire and then flattened it into a 3,40×0,60mm strip. I soldered this strip to the centre of the shell, all around the ring. The ends lifted slightly and were soldered to the top of the stone setting, leaving a little gap on the sides.
Finally I finished filing and sanding the whole ring and began polishing. The worst part about polishing silver is removing firestain. Firestain is a grey stain that forms just beneath the surface of silver during soldering, due to the oxidisation of copper present in the metal. To remove it you have to also remove all the metal till bellow the stain, by using tripoli. It’s not easy to remove it on small corners where the brushes won’t reach. After spending hours on this stage, I finally managed to remove around 90% of the stain. The jewellery we see in stores is often electroplated to cover the stain with a fine film of silver. There are other industrial methods to remove firestain but they use acids and machines that are not affordable for a small studio.
Before the final polishing stage I had to set the stone. The claws need to be filled a little on the inside so the metal bends easily over the stone. For the tip of the claw to bend completely over the stone it’s usually necessary to insert the jeweller’s saw between the stone and the metal and remove a little more metal, following the contour of the stone. Somewhere along this process I must have gotten a little overenthusiastic and one of the claws broke. Because the claws were made from a strip of metal rather than the usual wire, I may have removed a little too much metal from that one. It was necessary to remove it and solder a new one in its place. It wasn’t hard but the damn firestain that I had already removed was back and I had to polish it all over again. A few small pores were also visible that hadn’t been there before but I have to take my teacher’s word for it when he tells me I’m being too much of a perfectionist and stop obsessing over it 🙂
I finally finished the ring and was quite pleased with the result. It’s a bit big but the stone was rather large so it needed a ring that looked solid enough to support it.

A penúltima peça de joalharia do primeiro ano do curso foi um anel com 3 ametistas.
O objectivo do exercàcio era fazer uma anel em chapa com bata. A curvatura e a forma geral eram ao meu critério. Optei por um anel mais estreito atrás, por uma questão de conforto. Para tal corta-se a chapa em losango que depois é encurvado na embutideira e soldado na zona mais fina, formando o corpo principal.
As batas (fio que dá espessura ao anel para não ficar apenas uma chapa fininha) foram feitas com fio de 1mm quadrado e soldadas por dentro da chapa, uma de cada lado. Não é um processo fácil devido à curva da chapa. As batas devem encaixar na chapa mas geralmente tendem a descair. Convém amarrar tudo com fio de ferro para ter a certeza que não descaem quando a solda começa a correr.
Convém também que a soldadura da bata coincida com a soldadura da chapa do anel, para a eventualidade de ser necessário serrar o anel (apara alterar o tamanho, por exemplo) se poder serrar tudo de uma só vez.
Para maior segurança na soldadura, comecei por colocar apenas um palhão de solda e depois de ter a bata presa por esse ponto, acertar a curvatura e só então soldar o resto. Tentar fazer tudo de uma vez tem mais tendência para dar problemas.
Nesta altura fiz alguma limpeza da superfàcie e arredondei as arestas. Foi um passo necessário porque depois de soldar mais elementos em cima da base torna-se mais difàcil corrigir certas imperfeições. O problema é que ao retirar o excesso de solda cedo demais, corre-se o risco da solda mexer quando se aquece outra vez e ficar com pequenas zonas por preencher. Mesmo utilizando o corrector para proteger as soldaduras anteriores, isso tem tendência para acontecer. A melhor forma de o evitar é usar solda com diferentes pontos de fusão – começar com uma com menos cobre para as batas e depois usar outra com mais cobre para o resto.
Com a base do anel completa, fiz virolas para os cabochons de ametista. As virolas são feitas com uma tira de prata com 0,3 mm de espessura para ser fácil de pressionar sobre as pedras. A base teve de ser limada até seguir a curva da chapa, antes de soldar. Amarrei as virolas à base com fio de ferro para as manter no lugar durante a soldadura. Com as virolas no sítio, fiz um furinho na chapa de base, no centro de cada uma, e serrei o excesso de metal para que a luz passe através da pedra.
Fiz duas alianças de fio redondo e dois S que coloquei como elementos decorativos, por cima e por baixo das virolas. Depois lixei a superfàcie, satinei com a fresa de diamante para dar alguma textura àsuperfàcie e assim permitir ao oxido uma melhor fixação, e cravei as pedras.
Por fim oxidei a peça. Para oxidar uma peça parcialmente, o método mais simples é aquecê-la ligeiramente (se as pedras forem resistentes à temperatura) e aplicar o óxido com um pincel fino. Depois é só polir as zonas que não ficaram oxidadas e dar apenas uma breve passagem nas zonas oxidadas para que fiquem com um pouco de brilho mas sem retirar a cor.
English: One of the last pieces from the basic jewellery course I’m attending was an amethyst ring.
The goal of the piece was to make a domed ring with an inner wall. This adds a certain dimension to the band without the need to use heavy gauge sheet. The curvature and general shape of the ring were up to me. I chose to taper the ring toward the back, so it fit more comfortably on the finger. I’m not used to wearing such wide bands, so this was my compromise.
To make the ring band I cut a lozenge shape out of 0,5 mm (24 AWG) silver sheet, curved in on a doming block, sized it and soldered the thinner end together. The size should be a little larger than the intended finished size because the inner walls will take up some room on the inside of the band.
The inner walls were made from 1 mm (18 AWG) square wire, formed into two circles and then curved until they followed the edges of the ring band, which in this case had a slight curve to it, due to the tapered shape. The walls must fit perfectly inside the ring band.
Due do the domed shape of the band, these inner walls tend to slip into the ring rather than stay put at the edges like intended. I used iron binding wire to secure them in place while soldering. The best technique is to find one spot where the wall meets the band in the exact place you want it and add some solder to that spot only. Once this spot is secure you can more easily manipulate the walls to fit better all around before soldering the rest.
It’s also a good idea for the join of the walls to coincide with the join on the band so that, in case you need to saw it open (to adjust size, for example) you saw the whole thing over the soldered join rather than risk cutting the walls into bits that could move when the ring is re-soldered.
At this point I did some cleanup and rounded the edges of the ring. After soldering other elements on top it gets harder to reach certain areas and might be impossible to correct certain imperfections. On the other hand, when possible I only clean solder joins at the end because when I solder again the solder may move and create pits or small gaps. The best solution for this problem is to start with hard solder for the structure of the ring and then move on to medium.
Once the ring base was done I made bezels for the amethyst cabochons I had chosen for this piece. The bezels were made from a silver strip 0,3 mm thick (28 AWG) so they were thin enough to easily bend over the stone. The base of the bezels had to be filed until it conformed to the dome shape of the ring. I tied the bezels to the ring shank with iron binding wire to secure them before soldering. After soldering the bezels in place I drilled a hole in the center of each one and sawed off excess sheet metal from underneath the stones. This is done so that light can shine through the stone. It also helps if you need to push out the stone at some point.
I made another two circles out of 0,9 mm (19 AWG) round round wire that fit over the edge of the band on both sides. I also created some decorative S shapes to solder on the sides of the cabochons.
Once all the soldering was done I sanded the ring with 400 and 600 grit sandpaper and used a diamond burr to add texture to the outer surface of the ring. Liver of sulfur, used to darken the metal, adheres better to a textured surface.
I set the amethyst cabochons. I used a burnisher to finish polishing the bezels after setting.
Finally I applied the LOS (liver of sulfur). To partially oxidise the piece, the best method is to heat it up just a bit with the torch and then apply the patina with a thin paintbrush. I did a final polish to remove any patina stains from areas that should be bright and buffed the oxidised area briefly to bring out some shine.
Terminei mais uma peça nas aulas de joalharia. Desta vez foi um pendente, cujo objectivo era aprender a fazer tubos metálicos, chamados canevões. O design da peça era à minha escolha, desde que incluàsse o canevão como um dos elementos.
Escolhi fazer um pendente triangular com pequenas flores e placas onduladas. As flores são igualmente triangulares, para acompanhar o tema. Apesar dos elementos estarem dispostos de forma assimétrica, tentei criar um equilàbrio e preenchimento coerente do interior do triângulo. Os canevões são usados em duas situações: como pontos decorativos entre as placas onduladas e também como forma de sustentação do pendente.
Optei por fazer parte das flores em cobre para dar alguma cor à prata. Podia ter feito em ouro, que acrescentaria algum valor à peça, mas gosto mais da cor do cobre. É uma questão de preferência pessoal.
Para fazer a moldura do pendente, usei o primeiro lingote que fiz na aula. Foi laminado até ficar uma placa com 370×1 mm. Formei o triângulo, de acordo com o desenho, mas optando por manter os cantos arredondados.
Depois de serrar todas as peças, comecei por montar as flores.
Em vez de soldar um fio à base de cada triângulo, que podia partir facilmente, optei por formar uma pequena bola na ponta do fio e furar os triângulos para o pé atravessar a placa de cobre, tornando a construção mais resistente. A bolinha de prata no meio da flor também acrescenta algum interesse e variação.
Uma das flores foi feita através da soldadura de pequenas bolas de cobre a um fio de prata, àsemelhança de uns brincos que eu tinha feito antes do Natal. A diferença é que desta vez não martelei as bolinhas de cobre antes de soldar.
Depois de soldar todas as peças, foi a vez de fazer os canevões. É um processo relativamente simples mas requer uma ferramenta que não tenho ainda: uma embutideira para formar cilindros. Para formar um canevão utiliza-se uma chapa relativamente fina – 3,5mm – e corta-se um bico numa das pontas. Coloca-se a chapa na embutideira e por cima um objecto cilàndrico que encaixe no furo escolhido da embutideira (geralmente um embutidor deitado), martela-se o embutidor de forma a afundar a chapa até esta adquirir a forma arredondada da embutideira. Assim que o cilindro está meio formado, dobram-se as pontas da chapa, no lado do bico, e depois utiliza-se a fieira para fechar o resto do cilindro, puxando o bico com um alicate.
Depois do cilindro estar fechado podia continuar a puxar-se por furos mais finos na fieira, para reduzir o tamanho do canevão. Isso irá também aumentar a espessura das paredes, ao comprimir o metal.
Para fazer um canevão do tamanho certo logo desde o início deve-se utilizar a matemática: medida do diâmetro (interior ou exterior, àsua escolha) menos a grossura do metal (que só é importante para chapas grossas, senão pode-se saltar este passo) x3,14 (Pi) dá-nos a largura a cortar.
Também era possível continuar a passar para furos mais pequenos na embutideira e continuar a martelar a chapa até esta fechar completamente, mas este método tem um risco maior de deixar marcas na chapa. Utilizando a fieira é um método mais simples e limpo. De notar que o canevão meio formado deve ser recozido (aquecido) e coberto de cera antes de ser colocado na fieira. A cera funciona como lubrificação, tornando o trabalho mais simples e poupando a ferramenta.
Os canevões pequenos foram soldados no sítio e o grande foi forçado sobre uma adrasta de pulseiras, para adquirir curvatura. Utilizei apenas as mãos, segurando nas pontas do canevão e fazendo pressão sobre a adrasta. Utilizar um martelo ou outra ferramenta não é aconselhado porque cria mossas no canevão.
Para soldar o canevão de sustentação do pendente coloquei os elementos sobre a plasticina até estarem na posição correcta e depois cobri de gesso toda a peça excepto a zona que queria soldar. O gesso dá muito jeito quando queremos ter a certeza que os elementos não mexem durante a soldadura mas também absorve grande parte do calor o que torna a soldadura mais complicada e demorada. O truque é aquecer todo o gesso e não só o metal antes de focar o calor na zona a soldar. É das técnicas mais complicadas que aprendi até agora, apesar de ser algo que é suposto facilitar a soldadura.
O canevão serviu também para fazer os terminais do fio, aos quais foram soldados pequenas argolas para encaixar no fecho. O fecho é uma variante dos fechos em S. O aspecto final é em 8 e uma das pontas foi soldada para maior segurança.
Também criei um espigão para colocar uma pequena pérola num dos canevões decorativos. O espigão consiste num fio onde formei uma bola na ponta. A bolinha tem de ficar justa ao canevão e é soldada lá dentro. Depois é só uma questão de cortar o espigão à altura certa e colar a pérola após o polimento.
O interior da peça foi texturada com uma cabeça diamantada e o exterior foi polido com feltro e pom-pom de algodão. No final tirei a medida ao fio de cabedal, inseri-o no pendente e colei os terminais e a pérola. A cola utilizada foi Araldite cristal, que é basicamente resina de secagem rápida.

I finished another piece from my jewellery course. This time it was a pendant. The goal was to learn how to make tubes and then use them in a design.
I chose to make a triangular pendant with small flowers and waves. The flowers also have a triangular shape to follow the theme. Even though the composition is asymmetrical, I tried to balance the elements in the design. The tubes are used in two situations: As decorative “dots” between the wavy lines and also as a bail for the leather cord to slide through.
I chose to make part of the flowers in copper to add some color, since I wouldn’t use a gemstone. I could have used gold, which would add monetary value to the pendant but I happen to like the tone of copper. It was a personal preference.
To make the frame I used the ingot I had made in class. I flattened it in the rolling mill until I had a sheet measuring 370×1 mm. I formed the triangle but chose to keep rounded corners.
After sawing out all the parts I began to shape and assemble the flowers. Instead of soldering wire to the base of each flower, which would make them fragile, I balled up the end of the wires, drilled a hole into the copper triangles and inserted the stems, with the ball on top, as the center of the flowers.
One of the flowers was different. I made it by soldering small copper balls around the silver stem, like small unopened buds.
After soldering all the pieces together I made the tubes. It’s a fairly easy process if you have the right tools. I still don’t have a swage block to shape the inicial half cylinders, so I can only do it in class.
To make a tube I started with a fairly thin strip – 3,5mm thick – and cut a triangular tip on one end. I placed this strip into the largest hole on the swage block with a doming punch on top of it and hammered it down until it conformed to the curve of the swage block. I kept moving to smaller and smaller grooves until the strip formed a half cylinder.
At this point I annealed and covered the metal with wax (for lubrication) before proceeding to pull it through a large hole on the drawplate with pliers, and then through smaller holes until the cylinder was closed.
From then on, if you keep moving through smaller holes you reduce the size of the tube and also compress the metal, so the thickness of the tube walls will increase. To make a cylinder the size you want without increasing the thickness of the walls you should use math – diameter (inner or outer, your choice) minus thickness of the metal (only necessary for thick plates, otherwise you can skip this step) x3,14 (Pi) gives you the length to cut.
If you don’t have a drawplate with large enough holes, you can just shape the cylinder by hammering the metal around a mandrel, like a doming punch, until it’s closed. This has a greater risk of marring the metal but it can be done.
The tubes were soldered to close and the large one was curved over a bracelet mandrel to form a subtle curve. I used just my hands to curve it because I didn’t want to risk leaving tool marks or deforming it.
To solder the bail tube to the pendant I first filled the top of the triangle flat to give it a larger contact area and then placed the elements over plasticine to make sure everything was precisely where it should be. I covered everything in plaster except for the area I wanted to solder. Stabilising in plaster is the best way to prevent elements from moving out of place when you solder. The downside is that it sucks up a lot of heat so it takes longer to get the solder to flow. The trick is to heat the plaster before the metal. Once it starts to look burnt you can focus the heat on the metal.
The tube was also used for the leather cord end caps. I soldered a small jump ring at the end of each tube to connect them to the clasp. The clasp has an S shape that is very secure. One of the ends is soldered shut and only the other end is open.
In one of the decorative tubes, between the wavy lines, I soldered a prong do I could add a small pearl. To center the prong in the tube I balled up the end until it was a tight fit inside the tube and then soldered it. The prong was cut to size and the pearl was glued in place after polishing.
The inside areas were textured with a diamond burr. The outside was polished with felt and greed polishing compound and then buffed with a cotton puff and red rouge.
I inserted the leather cord into the pendant before gluing on the end caps. I used Araldite crystal glue, which is basically a fast drying form of epoxy resin.
As minhas aulas de joalharia continuam a correr bem. É pena que sejam só quatro horas por semana porque demoro imenso tempo a terminar uma peça, mas gosto muito de lá estar. O ambiente é óptimo e faz-me bem interagir com outros humanos ocasionalmente, especialmente com pessoas que partilham os mesmos interesses. Estar no atelier é completamente diferente de andar na escola porque ninguém está lá por obrigação. Há sempre alturas mais frustrantes, em que as coisas correm mal ou em que é preciso fazer uma tarefa mais monótona ou complicada, mas o nàvel de queixume geral é surpreendentemente baixo. Grande parte disso deve-se ao professor que é extremamente positivo e faz um esforço enorme por manter toda a gente motivada.
Terminei finalmente a segunda peça do curso. Foi uma pregadeira, com tema lançado pelo professor: monumentos portugueses. Escolhi o Convento de Cristo em Tomar. Inicialmente pensei basear-me numa escada em caracol mas posteriormente optei por uma janela. Não a famosa janela Manuelina mas uma outra, redonda, que se situa por cima dessa. O aspecto da janela faz-me lembrar o obturador de uma máquina fotográfica e tem o mesmo desenho em espiral da escada que eu tinha escolhido inicialmente.

Para não criar algo terrivelmente óbvio, acabei por usar a distorção da perspectiva causada pela foto para criar uma peça oval em vez de redonda, com a abertura da janela, onde iria assentar uma pedra, descentrada.

Estabelecido o desenho da peça, foi necessário cortar as várias chapas que iriam ser soldadas, sobrepostas.

As chapas foram depois embutidas para ficarem com uma curvatura e montadas temporariamente numa base de plasticina até se obter o encaixe perfeito entre todas as peças.
Como é praticamente impossível soldar uma peça desta complexidade aos bocadinhos, esta montagem temporária foi coberta com gesso para manter todas as placas no sítio. A peça foi retirada da plasticina, ficando presa ao gesso. Esta montagem permitiu fazer os primeiros apontamentos de solda.
Quando as peças estavam todas soldadas numa ponta, foi possível retirar o gesso e proceder ao resto da soldadura.
Quando estava tudo finalmente montado e soldado, foi a vez de fazer a bata. A bata é uma tira metálica que serve para dar altura à peça. É particularmente importante em peças como pendentes ou pregadeiras, para que estas ganhem algum destaque em vez de ficarem planas junto ao corpo.
As batas não têm de ser muito grossas mas como a peça era grande, ficou com cerca de um milàmetro de espessura. Depois de laminar a chapa com a altura e espessura correctas, cortei secções do tamanho de cada uma das placas do topo para manter a saliência dos cantos. Soldar a bata foi complicado porque esta não tinha apoio. Estabilizar uma peça com um centàmetro de largura sobre uma superfàcie curva, tendo a certeza que fica alinhada com o limite da chapa de base e não cai durante o processo é um verdadeiro quebra-cabeças. Assentei a peça numa base de gravilha (areia térmica) para dar estabilidade e prendi a bata à peça com fio de ferro mas, como a base era redonda, o fio tinha tendência para escorregar.
Foi um processo longo e algo frustrante porque ocasionalmente a bata mexia na pior altura possàvel e era difàcil voltar a prendê-la na posição correcta, já para não falar na complicação que foi preencher todas as juntas de solda sem ficar nenhum furinho. Como a curvatura das diversas peças era diferente, foi complicado ajustar perfeitamente a curvatura da bata, o que criava pequenos espaços aqui e ali. A solda não serve para preencher espaços pelo que foi preciso alguma ginástica para completar o processo com um acabamento perfeito. O outro problema técnico é que a peça tinha muito metal, o que quer dizer que é difàcil de aquecer uniformemente. Isso implica que a solda nem sempre corria na direcção desejada e era muito fácil derreter soldaduras anteriores. Usei e abusei do corrector e mesmo assim foi necessário acrescentar solda nalguns pontos onde a solda anterior teimava em fugir. Foi de facto um puzzle complicado de montar.
Quando estava tudo finalmente montado, foi necessário fazer um acabamento prévio. Limei e lixei as arestas e arredondei a peça para a junção da bata com a chapa ser menos evidente e a peça ter um aspecto mais coerente por inteiro. Este tipo de acabamento só se costuma fazer no fim mas como precisava de soldar mais elementos em cima desta forma base, precisei de o fazer agora.
A fase seguinte consistiu em enrolar dois fios de prata de 0,7 mm para criar as cordas, elemento tàpico da arquitectura Manuelina. Já tinha feito cordas de dois fios enrolados, mas sempre com fio comprado já na espessura certa e recozido. Neste caso tive the passar o fio na fieira para o por com a espessura indicada e recozer o fio com o maçarico. Recozer fio uniformemente com maçarico é complicado. O resultado é muitas vezes irregular, o que faz com que o fio não enrole todo da mesma forma. Para resolver esse problema, tive a ajuda do professor Paulo que foi aquecendo os fios com o maçarico, enquanto eu enrolava. Acredito que dê para fazer isto só com uma pessoa mas é muito mais complicado e uma pequena distracção pode derreter o fio todo.
Depois de cortar as secções de “corda” à medida, fiz um apontamento de solda sobre a bata e depois moldei a corda à forma das chapas antes de soldar a outra ponta. Mais uma vez, manter as pequenas cordas no sàtio certo não foi fácil, mas menos complicado do que soldar a bata. A parte mais complicada foi conseguir aquecer toda a peça sem derreter as cordas. A solução foi soldar as cordas dando calor por baixo da peça já que a chapa metálica, que é uma área muito maior, precisava de aquecer mais do que a corda que era composta por fios fininhos.
Com a base terminada, foi a vez de criar as peças da pregadeira. A pregadeira é composta por 3 elementos:
1. O click, que neste modelo é uma chapa comprida enrolada em caracol. É a peça que permite abrir e fechar a pregadeira.
Para fazer o click usei uma tira de chapa a 0,5 mm de espessura com 4×17 mm. A 2 mm de uma ponta dobrei a chapa em L. O lado mais curto foi soldado à parte de trás da pregadeira e a ponta mais comprida (com cerca de 15 mm) é que se enrola em caracol, depois de soldar. Não se dá nenhuma serragem na dobra para não fragilizar o componente.
2. O pé é o nome que se dá ao espigão. É afiado numa ponta e na outra tem uma forma achatada, de cantos redondos. Esta forma pode ser feita de duas maneiras: ou se solda uma pequena chapa por baixo da ponta do fio ou se derrete uma bola na ponta do fio que depois é martelada até a espalmar. Em ambos os casos é preciso arredondar a zona de baixo e é depois feito um furo no meio desta zona mais larga por onde vai passar um rebite. Este furo só se faz depois de soldar o gonzo na peça. O comprimento inicial do pé deve ser ligeiramente maior do que a distância do gonzo ao click. No final lima-se a ponta até formar um bico para espetar na roupa. O pé é o último componente da peça a ser montado.
3. O gonzo: Base em U com um furo onde se prende o pé através de um rebite. Funciona como uma dobradiça.
Dobrei ao meio uma chapa de 0,5 mm com 16×5 mm, deixando espaço entre as duas metades para encaixar a zona espalmada do pé (espigão). Forma-se assim um U com a chapa. Esse U vai ser soldado deitado, com a dobra virada para o click. Antes de soldar é necessário recortar uma curva e bico no topo da forma, como se pode ver na foto, e furar a chapa para passar o rebite. Quanto o gonzo está furado, insere-se o pé, verifica-se se roda bem e marca-se o sàtio do furo. Só nesta fase é que se faz o furo no pé para ter a certeza que fica alinhado com o furo do gonzo.
O rebite era um pequeno fio com 1 mm de espessura, que era também o tamanho dos furos. Devem ficar 1 ou 2 mm de fora de cada lado, quando se insere no gonzo. Para prender o rebite basta apertar com um alicate de ambos os lados.
Com os componentes da pregadeira feitos, virei-me para a cravação da pedra. A pedra escolhida foi um cabochon de goldstone azul. É uma pedra sintética, feita através da suspensão de minerais em vidro num ambiente com pouco oxigénio, mas tem um brilho fantástico.
Fiz uma cravação em virola, com uma chapa de 0,3 mm com altura suficiente para cobrir apenas cerca de um milímetro acima do início de curvatura da pedra. Por dentro soldei um anel feito com fio de 0,8 mm para servir de base à pedra. já tinha feito cravação de virola assente sobre uma chapa mas nunca tinha usado fio como base. Poupa-se imenso metal e a parte de baixo da pedra fica muito mais exposta, com menos trabalho. Acho que vou passar a usar esta técnica de futuro para pedras resistentes. Pedras muito moles ou quebradiças podem necessitar de mais apoio atrás.
Foi necessário cortar o centro da peça e, com uma fresa de diamante, gastar o metal na zona do furo até a virola encaixar perfeitamente. Depois soldei a virola à base e na mesma altura soldei o click e o gonzo nas traseiras.
Antes do polimento escureci a peça com patina, neste caso sulfureto de potássio (também conhecido como fígado de enxofre). Ao polir, a prata recuperou muito do seu brilho mas a patina dá destaque ao entrançado das cordas e um tom mais cinzento a toda a peça, que combinam melhor com a pedra escura.
O polimento demorou cerca de 5 horas. É sempre uma das partes mais demoradas, mesmo em peças simples. Depois de polir foi altura de cravar a pedra e fixar o pé. Como não era possível martelar a cavilha para formar o rebite, o fio que prende o pé ao gonzo foi apertado com um alicate para esmagar as pontas, formando uma cabeça de prego de cada lado.
Como é costume nestas coisas, quando achava que estava tudo pronto, o pé partiu. Não sei se o metal estava demasiado duro e o rebite demasiado apertado ou se foi uma falha do metal. Só sei que tive de gastar o rebite para soltar o pé, soldar, voltar a polir e colocar novo rebite. Pelo menos aprendi a reparar uma pregadeira partida 🙂
Apesar de ter sido feita por mim, esta peça é propriedade do atelier de joalharia, que forneceu todos os materiais utilizados. O objectivo é expor esta e outras peças dos restantes alunos com o tema dos monumentos portugueses, em eventos como a Portojóia. É uma forma de mostrar o trabalho desenvolvido pelos alunos do atelier. Há quem faça um duplicado para si, mas sinceramente eu estou mais interessada em aprender as técnicas do que ficar com todas as peças que produzo. E não há dúvida que uma peça desta complexidade técnica ensina muito.

My jewellery classes are going well. It’s a shame that they’re only 4 hours a week because it takes so long to finish each piece at this pace, but I enjoy being there. here’s a great atmosphere and it’s good for me to interact with other adult humans once in a while, especially with people who share the same interests. Being at the jewellery studio is so different than being in a regular school because no one feels they’re forced to be there. Sometimes it’s frustrating, when things go wrong with the work or you need to do more repetitive tasks, but the overall complaint level is surprisingly low. Our teacher is greatly responsible for this positive atmosphere because he’s a very good humoured person who makes a great effort to keep people motivated.
I finally finished the second piece in the course. This time it’s a pin, or brooch, with a theme selected by the teacher: Portuguese Monuments. I chose the Convent of Christ in Tomar. It was built over a long period of time so it has elements from several different styles, from Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline (Portugal’s late gothic style, known for it’s stone knotwork) and into the Renaissance period.
At first I was going to base the design on a spiral staircase but opted for a window instead. Not the famous Manueline window, which for me would have been way too obvious and make the piece a little too busy, but a smaller, round window above it, that reminded me of a camera shutter mechanism and also followed the spiral pattern similar to the staircase I had chosen initially.
I didn’t want to make it too obvious so I used the photograph’s perspective distortion to make an oval rather than round piece, with the window’s opening, where the stone would sit, placed off center.
Once the design was set, I used a jeweller’s saw to cut all the parts out of 0,5 mm sterling silver sheet. The plan was to solder the edge of each one on top of the previous, like steps. I drew numbers on all the parts with a needle, so I wouldn’t mess up the order they should be assembled in. An obvious step but one that we sometimes forget by trying to rush ahead.
All the spiral parts were domed in a dapping cube (by hammering the dapping punch over the metal until it conforms to the curve) and then I assembled the shape over plasticine until I was happy with the overlap. This is a great technique to secure all the bits in place when you have an intricate design like this one.
It’s really difficult to solder a piece of this complexity bit by bit and make everything line up correctly, so I poured plaster over all the pieces assembled in the plasticine. This keeps everything in place.
Once the plaster dried, I removed it from the plasticine, and the metal remained attached to the plaster, allowing me to solder while keeping all the metal parts in place. I soldered all the tips together. I could solder everything at once, but if I did that there was no room for error, and being a newbie still, it was safer to solder the tips and then make sure everything else was still in place before running the solder over all the joints.
Once the parts were all attached to each other I removed the plaster. I broke off the larger pieces and then placed the rest in a container full of water to help remove the rest. The plaster show go in the trash. Don’t poor it down the drain because it can clog up your pipes.
After soldering all the “steps” in the spiral, it was time to make the walls. The walls add height to a piece and make it solid and finished instead of a flimsy piece of sheet metal. It’s particularly important for brooches and pendants because it makes them stand up from the body or clothing.
Walls don’t need to be very thick, but this was a large piece so I settled on 1 mm thickness. I made 2 mm square wire in the rolling mill and the squashed it until it was 1 mm thick. I could have made it all one piece but I wanted the corners in each plate to stand out so I cut portions as I went, curved and filed them to fit the plate.
Soldering the walls wasn’t easy. I had to stabilise a thin strip over the very edge of a curved shape and it kept slipping out of place.
It was a long and frustrating process. I used a pumice pan to support the piece and tied the wall with iron binding wire but it would still move around. The best option was to hold the wall with third hand tweezers but even then it would slip out of place at the worst possible time, making it really hard to get back into place. It took forever!
It was also difficult to make the walls conform perfectly to the curve: each part of the spiral had a slightly different curvature and I had to make sure there were no gaps. It turns out I wasn’t using enough solder, but even still, it was quite a headache getting everything to fit properly. Solder should never be used to plug gaps anyway because it will move the next time you heat the piece and the gap will should up again.
The other problem I faced was the fact that this was my first large piece and it took forever to heat up enough for the solder to flow. I covered previous joints with white correction fluid but the solder would still move on occasion or it wouldn’t run in the direction I wanted it to.
When I managed to solder everything into place I had to do a bit of cleanup by filing the edges where the curved sheet metal connects with the wall, to round up the shape and make it all fit together. This was done now because I still had to solder other elements on top of the shape.
The next step was twisting two 0,7 mm wires together to make “rope”, a typical element of Manueline architecture. I had done this sort of thing before but I’d used industrially made wire that was already annealed. This time I had to use a drawplate to get my wire to the desired thickness and it’s not easy to uniformly anneal wire with a torch. Some bits will usually get softer than others, which makes it hard to twist the wires evenly.
To solve this issue, my teacher heated the metal with a torch as I was twisting the wire, whenever we felt that a section wasn’t cooperating. It can be done by a single person but you have to play close attention to the process and where you point the torch so as not to risk melting the wire or burning something.
I cut all the “rope” sections, soldered one end to the brooch and then molded it along the curved edge before soldering the other end. Once again, keeping the twisted wires in place wasn’t easy but much simpler than the walls. The hardest part was heating the whole piece without melting the twisted wires. To prevent such a disaster I heated from underneath.
The body of the brooch was completed so I focused on the construction of the pin mechanism. The pin is made up of three components:
1. The catch – in this case it’s made from a long strip curled into a spiral. It’s what keeps the brooch closed.
To make the catch I used a 4×17 mm strip of 0,5 sterling silver. At 2mm from one end I bent it to form an L shape. The shorter end was soldered onto the back of the brooch and the longer end (15 mm long) was then curled into a spiral.
2. The pin stem – a long wire with one sharp end and a flat end with a hole in the middle (top of the picture above). The flat end is attached to the joint by a rivet and the sharp end goes through the clothing to keep it in place.
I made the pin out of 1 mm wire. It can be made out of thicker wire but the thicker it is, the more likely it can damage the clothes.
The flat end can be achieved by hammering and then drilling a hole though it or you can solder a small square of silver sheet and round the corners. I chose to hammer the wire. This flat area will need to be drilled but only after the joint has been soldered into place.
The length of the pin depends on how far apart the catch and the joint are placed. I made it longer than I needed to make sure there would be enough to go through the catch. Only after everything was in place did I cut it to size and file the sharp end.
3. The joint – a U-shaped hinge that connects to the pin stem.
I bent a 16×5 mm strip of 0,5 mm sterling silver sheet in half, leaving enough room in the middle so the pin stem could slot into it. The U shape is soldered on its side, with the closed portion facing the catch. I cut one side of the U shape according to the design in the photo (front and back). Drilled a hole in the middle of the round area and soldered it onto the brooch, opposite the catch. Then I inserted the pin stem, checked the shape and marked where I should drill the hole so it would line up with the one on the joint. Only then did I drill the hole in the pin stem.
I attached the pin with a rivet. The rivet was made out of a small portion of 1 mm wire (the same size as the hole). There should be 1 or 2 mm of wire sticking out of each end when inserted. To close it I simply squeezed it with pliers.
This part is done only at the very end, after all the soldering and polishing is done.
Finally I worked on the stone setting. I used a round blue goldstone cabochon. I made a bezel out of 0,3 mm sterling silver sheet, only tall enough to reach about 1 mm beyond the part of the stone that starts to curve inward.
I soldered a jump ring inside the bezel, at the base, to support the stone. This uses less metal than a backplate and allows light to shine through. If the stone isn’t too fragile it’s a good option.
In order to accommodate the bezel, I had to cut out a hole in the brooch. I used a diamond burr to open the orifice until the bezel fit perfectly. I soldered the bezel into the brooch first and then added the catch and joint to the back.
Before polishing, I used Liver of Sulfur to oxidize the piece. When I polished, the silver regained it’s shine but the recessed areas remained dark, adding depth to the design. I think it also matches the dark stone as well.
Polishing took about 5 hours, mostly because I’m not that experienced at it yet. It is always time consuming, though, even for more experienced people.
After polishing I set the stone and finally added the pin stem, which broke. I don’t know if it was too hardened or too tight, but it didn’t make it. When something goes wrong it’s usually at the very end. Fortunately, it was an easy fix. I filed the rivet head on one side so I could remove it, made a new pin stem, polished it and attached it with a new rivet. At least I learned how to fix a broken pin.
Even though I made this piece, it belongs to the jewellery studio and was made with materials supplied by my teacher. Every two years the students make an exhibit piece that remains in the studio for show. Each collection has a theme and will be shown in several venues over the next couple of years in representation of the school. Some students make a duplicate for themselves but i’m more interested in learning the techniques than keeping everything I make, so I didn’t. I did learn a lot, though.
– I love hoop earrings. They are not always in style but I don’t really care – I make them anyway and wait until they come back into fashion 🙂
I finally gathered the right combination of beads, in the right shades of blue, green and gold, to make the hoop earrings I’ve been planning for a while. I should have made them sooner, since the colours are more spring than autumn, but, like I said, I didn’t get the right beads until now. The peridot ovals are like leafs hanging from a branch and all the other beads (peridot, apatite and tourmaline) are wrapped as if by a vine around the hoop.
The best thing about the earrings is that they are incredibly light, since weight is sometimes a problem with hoop earrings and can make them uncomfortable to wear. These are light because the beads are small and the hoops are made from a relatively thin wire (hammered to keep its shape, obviously).
